5-STAR REVIEW: ON THE EDGE OF SHATTERED by Kimberly Kearns

The Description

Publication Date: November 1, 2022

Before she stopped drinking for good, Kim was lying to herself and everyone she knew about her daily habit—sneaking morning sips of vodka behind her husband’s back, emptying bottles of wine and hiding the evidence from her family, and convincing herself that nothing was wrong and everything was under control. Until she realized that it wasn’t, and that her dishonesty could cost her everything she loved. What would happen to her marriage if things continued in this way? And how could she be a mother to her young children if she remained trapped in this cycle of abuse? Deciding she had to make a change, Kim threw herself into a new life of sobriety seven months into the Covid-19 pandemic. But only after severing the chains of bondage did she realize how much work there was still to do. Opening the doors to buried memories and past traumas was only the beginning. Throughout her journey to sobriety, Kim would come to terms with the secrets and lies told by her parents and loved ones, allowing her a clarity and freedom she never before thought possible.

The Review

At age 38, Kimberly Kearns appears to have the perfect life with a loving husband, three children, and a COVID puppy. However, she’s hiding a secret that is turning her life into a nightmare.

On the Edge of Shattered dispels the image that alcoholics are all bums sitting on street corners with brown bags hiding their precious drug. No, in this case, it happens to be a wife and mother who uses alcohol as a means of escape while trying to carry on as usual.

It’s a story about a woman who finally realizes that the pain caused by hangover mornings is no longer worth it. So, she takes the first step to acknowledge that she has a problem and then reaches out for help.

While readers follow her present-day struggle with sobriety, Kearns uses alternating chapters to provide valuable context regarding her upbringing. Without the numbing effects of alcohol, she has to face her past in order to move forward.

The storyline resonates with hard truths, but because it focuses on the author’s life, there are plenty of celebration moments and time for laughter. By including both the ups and downs of her experience, the end result is real.

On the Edge of Shattered provides a compelling first-person account of being on the brink of losing it all and the difficult decision to change a destructive behavior.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
