4-STAR REVIEW: THE ASSHOLE’S GUIDE TO EVERYDAY LIVING by James Pravasilis

The Description

Publication Date: October 26, 2022

A satirical yet real perspective on individualism, sovereignty, spiritualism and social discourse through the eyes and ears of the every-man/woman/they/it/them/mammal that hates the taste of kale, has no time or patience for kundalini breathing exercises and is just trying to get through life with as minimal damage as possible in the “New Normal.”

Humor is the best medicine and this book provides a nice dose of haha’s for those of us who are fed up and aren’t pulled into the manufactured polarity and manipulation that is high jacking our individual consciousness.

The Review

There’s an old adage about not judging a book by its cover. Does that apply to titles, too? Author James Pravasilis delivers a self-help book using the title The Asshole’s Guide to Everyday Living.

Using a definite tongue-in-cheek approach, he adds a note for readers who might find some of the text too “rageful” or “heavy” to try reading it out loud in a high-pitched baby voice. Without a doubt, this is not a book for readers who are sensitive or easily offended.

There’s something rather commendable about an author who can devote 12 chapters and 97 pages featuring all sorts of potty humor while delivering some profound words of wisdom. However, his approach is very likely going to draw in readers who typically would shy away from a traditional self-help book.

Some of what he says would fall into the outright audacious category likely included to boost the shock value. The overall message of being able to think for oneself is a universal truth that can’t be emphasized enough.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
