Do you know how to write it or how to tell it? Creating Stories has the answers. Hank Quense, the author of more than twenty books, tells you how to do it. He believes that stories come from the melding of three elements: getting ideas, story design and story-telling. Ideas have to come from the author. Creating Stories covers the last two. The book concentrates on developing characters including such rarely discussed requirements such as a dominant reader emotion and the character’s biography. Plots are also covered in depth and a number of graphics are included to illustrate complex points. Another topic discusses subplots and how to utilize them and how to nest them within the main plot. A separate chapter discusses the relationship between the plot and the emotional arcs. Other topics covered are: character arcs, scene design, point-of-view, writing voice.
Any type of story, regardless of the format, requires common elements such as characters, plots, scenes, settings, and more.
With that in mind, author Hank Quense focuses on the story design process and storytelling for both beginning and advanced writers in his book Creating Stories.
What makes his approach different from techniques covered in writing manuals and other self-help books is his use of plain language and simple examples. He divides the book into four parts consisting of story setting and character development, plots and scene design, storytelling techniques, and a catch-all for everything else.
The chapters start with a short question and answer between Quense and a fictional author. This approach is very conversational and provides an excellent preview of the material that follows.
Complete with illustrations to assist writers in navigating the planning process, Creating Stories provides a comprehensive guide for successful writing.
Hank Quense has self-published his books for over 12 years. He also lectures on these subjects in schools, libraries and on webinars.
