4-STAR REVIEW: WINNER’S CURSE by L.A. Starks

The Description

Lynn Dayton Thrillers: Book 4
Publication Date: August 20, 2024

From author and global energy expert L.A. Starks, comes Winner’s Curse – a pulse-pounding new thriller that will grab and hurl you through the eye-opening and unexpectedly dramatic world of the oil and gas sector. While taking you from the desolate, windswept plains of west Texas to the salons of Hungary, Starks expertly infuses her insider knowledge of this trillion-dollar industry, and her experiences of being female in a male-dominated field into this science adventure.

The first-ever woman to lead the drilling division of TriCoast Energy, protagonist Lynn Dayton is determined to prove herself capable but finds herself facing more than just the usual water cooler backstabbing.

Undercutting her at every turn is former TriCoast Executive, Henry Vandervoost, who blames her for his humiliating fall from power. Ruthlessly competing with Lynn for control of Bradshaw Energy, his own playboy son’s company that has revolutionary energy technology, Vandervoost enlists the help of attractive young chemist Hannah Bosko to assist him in taking over the company.

Lynn must battle Vandervoost and international power players who conspire to eliminate her and her colleagues, foil conspiracies to sabotage natural gas plants, and complete a merger that will ensure that the technology remains in the hands of those who will use it to benefit the world.

Winner’s Curse is an energy technothriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. And, while this is the fourth book in the Lynn Dayton Thriller series, each can be read as a stand-alone novel.

The Review

Lynn Dayton’s new role not only comes with more responsibilities but also allows her to prove females can succeed in the gas and oil business industry.

As the fourth installment in the mystery series featuring Dayton, Winner’s Curse serves up a well-developed techno-thriller by author L.A. Starks.

When Lynn pursues a possible merger involving a company with valuable water recycling technology, she becomes embroiled in an international drama stretching from Hungary to Texas. Not only does she face danger from outside, but her new boss isn’t helping matters.

Easily read as a standalone, this installment takes relevant current events and delivers a high-octane storyline with a compelling cast of characters.

About The AuthorI was born in Boston, Massachusetts, grew up in northern Oklahoma, and now live in Texas. Awarded a full-tuition college scholarship, I earned a chemical engineering bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from New Orleans’ Tulane University, followed by a finance MBA from the University of Chicago. Working for well-known energy companies in engineering, marketing, and finance from refineries to corporate offices prepared me to write my first two accessible, award-winning, and reader-praised global energy thrillers 13 Days: The Pythagoras Conspiracy and Strike Price. Strike Price won a first place award as the best mystery/thriller from the Texas Association of Authors. In addition to my books, two of my short stories have been published in Amazon Shorts, a third in an anthology, and a fourth independently at KDP. I’ve completed my third global energy thriller and look forward to working on my fourth! I’m published on writing topics by Mystery Readers Journal, Sleuth Sayer (MWA-SW newsletter), and at several authors’ and professional blogs. Altogether I’ve appeared at over 150 book marketing events.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
