The Review

Tracie Peterson is nowhere near a newcomer to writing, with 110 books to her credit. Adding to her series of The Heart of Cheyenne is A Truth Revealed.

This is my first read from this author and I can attest to how easily the story flowed and how quickly 296 can be read when well crafted. Peterson is known for historical Christian fiction, and here she sets the story in Cheyenne, Wyoming in its early days. The town has been established, and the townsfolk are settling into a life with churches and places of business. Its settlers depend on each other and value hard work, community, and integrity.

Newcomer Laura Evans is now 23 and has been reunited with her father. Ten years prior, her mother died of consumption, and her father was too grief-stricken to raise her, so Laura was sent to boarding school. At that time, her parents were not wealthy, and her father thought, “Could money have bought his wife the care she deserved?” Now, Laura finds that her father, Granite Evans, has become single-minded in amassing a fortune to care for Laura upon her return.

As Laura easily gains friends, she hears from them how generous her father has been to Cheyenne. This strengthens her memories of the loving father she remembers. As days go on, breakfast conversations reveal how bitter her father feels over the loss of his wife. But Laura is patient and understands how some find it harder than others to hold firm to their belief in God in times of grief. Laura felt God’s presence strongly after she lost her mother by death and her father by distance. She gently tries to gradually instill faith back in her father.

The quiet backdrop of Cheyenne in 1868 gives the reader just enough to realize the hardships and lay of the land. It sets the Western bad guy storyline, but the characters take center stage. Friendships build easily through church gatherings, but lurking amongst the godly is someone whose heart is evil. There is talk that the Native Americans who are being pushed from their lands are the root of hideous events and tragedy to the townspeople, but it is soon found that revenge can come in all sorts of forms.
