3-STAR REVIEW: WINE & WHISPERS by Daisy Landish

The Description

Sophie Brooks Mysteries: Book 2
Publication Date: January 11, 2025

In the heart of wine country, secrets run as deep as the vines.

Sophie Brooks, a food blogger and digital nomad, heads to Sonoma’s wine country to explore its famous vineyards. But when a mysterious disappearance shatters the idyllic landscape, Sophie must uncover the truth hidden among the whispers and the wine.

Food blogger and digital nomad Sophie Brooks is on her first stop in Sonoma, California, where the wine flows as freely as the secrets. Eager to showcase the region’s farm-to-table dining scene, Sophie is ready to indulge in the local wines and meet the passionate people behind them. But when one of the vineyard’s owners goes missing, the peaceful countryside takes a dark turn.

As whispers of betrayal and old grudges swirl through the vines, Sophie finds herself caught in the middle of a mystery that threatens to unravel the very fabric of this picturesque wine country. With her sharp instincts and a love for uncovering the truth, Sophie must navigate the delicate balance between tasting fine wines and untangling deadly secrets.

Can she solve the mystery before the whispers turn into something more dangerous?

The Review

Wine & Whispers by author Daisy Landish had an excellent plot idea, and the backdrop of the story was set in Sonoma, California, which was a huge draw for me.

Though the description and ideas sounded compelling, the execution was less than stellar. There were a lot of disjointed parts to the book, but I wanted to do my due diligence by reviewing this book and fulfilling my obligation.

What I didn’t like was how much work the book needed. The book needed a good editor because there were so many editing errors. There were also a lot of redundant text messages.

The character Oliver—who I have no idea who he was—kept texting Sophie throughout the book. His texts made her smile. He kept telling her to be careful, and she was more and more determined as the story went on.

I was about halfway through the book, and the story came to an end. There was another chapter after that, and the story picked up at another point in time.

I liked that the “villain” of the story is a woman.  While I certainly don’t like villains, I like that the author went outside the box for her story.

I wanted to know what happened to Sophie and her ex-boyfriend. I know the author provided some backstory, but I think more needs to be provided.

I’ve reviewed before for the now closed Romancing the Book. I love reading whether it’s an ebook or a good old-fashioned book book. The smell of a book is such a nice smell. I work with handicapped adults in my real life and I live in New York State.
