4-STAR REVIEW: MURDER ON THE MISSISSIPPI by Erik S. Meyers

The Description

A Sally Witherspoon Mystery: Book 2
Publication Date: April 15, 2025

Six months after the events in Death in the Ozarks, Sally Witherspoon is trying to put that terrible time behind her. She books a river cruise down the Mississippi to get away and relax.

Unfortunately relaxation is not to be as as she’s called on to get to the bottom of a mysterious death that occurs on board.

A combination of Cheers bartender and Miss Marple, Sally Witherspoon is as determined as ever to solve it.

The Review

Murder on the Mississippi by Erik SMeyers is part of the Sally Witherspoon Mystery series. Sally Witherspoon is the owner and bartender at a biker bar in Alabama. Apparently, she helped solve a murder case there with the local police and is itching to do it again, especially when there’s a murder on the historical riverboat cruise she is on.

Not having read the first book, I sometimes found it difficult to follow the storyline, especially when details from the previous case and book were reported. Sally thinks she’ll be on a relaxing cruise, but things go awry fast. There are numerous characters, including guests on the ship and the crew, and there is a lot of police presence and the FBI. There are several side storylines as Sally and the others try to figure out why one of the guests, Jim, was murdered. When a crew member also comes up dead, the cruise grounds to a halt.

As clues are gathered and sifted through, Sally begins to figure out whodunnit, and many on the cruise have an unlikely connection. There is a depth to the story with a lot of details, but it was difficult to like some of the characters. When the murders are solved, Sally plans to return home and wonders what she’ll get involved with next.
