The Description

Publication Date: March 25, 2025

Brimming with wisdom and humor, My Mother Always Says offers timeless advice for navigating life.

Decades before the power of mindset was popularized, Gwen Borden was already finding the good in whatever life brought her way. At ninety-three years old, she has weathered the Great Depression, a polio epidemic, WWII, 9/11, and the early death of her husband. Her mantra remains: There are no bad experiences—only ones you don’t learn from.
My Mother Always Says inspires readers to draw from the well of the hard-won wisdom of our older generation. Cowritten with her daughter and women’s life coach, Amy Goober, this book seamlessly intertwines Gwen’s time-tested reflections with Amy’s modern approach for living with purpose and intention today.

Shared through a mixture of personal stories and relatable anecdotes, these twenty-five empowering and practical lessons offer fresh perspectives to: reframe your past, navigate relationships, manage the challenges of parenthood, define happiness, and find life’s silver linings. You will learn to see obstacles as stepping stones and flip the script on “bad” experiences to write a better life!

The Review

Remember all of those nuggets of wisdom coming from your mom that you failed to pay attention to? No worries. A mother/daughter team has compiled 25 timeless lessons.

My Mother Always Says takes the wisdom of Gwen Borden and packages it alongside application tips from her daughter, Amy Goober. Together, they relate impactful stories that are sure to inspire women of all stages of life.

Central to the book’s theme is the idea that there are no bad experiences in life, just ones we don’t learn from. With more than 90 years under her belt, Gwen shares wise observations without the artifice common today among influencers.

The practical advice about parenting, worrying, and putting things in perspective is supported by examples from both authors. Since the book itself is just a bit over 150 pages, it is easy to navigate a chapter at a time.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
