4-STAR REVIEW: SHOT FOR JUSTICE by J.R. Wheeless

The Description

Publication Date: June 25, 2025

Driven by vengeance, an army sniper returns home, seeking justice for his sister’s death. He crosses paths with a colorful cast of characters, including a retired detective and a beautiful woman, as he navigates a world of street gangs and moral dilemmas. His quest for justice leads him down a dark path as he walks the tightrope between right and wrong, forcing him to confront the ghosts of his past.

The descent into darkness forces the military veteran to grapple with moral compromises and the psychological toll of violence. This conflict shapes not only his actions, but also creates a sense of moral ambiguity. Is he doing the right thing by making others pay for an act that might not be of their doing?

Desire for human connection in the face of loss and the violence that has been his life, our hero seeks interactions with those he meets, revealing a hope to find solace and meaning beyond his violent past and the retribution he seeks for his sister’s death. Can these people save him from a future that might be his undoing?

The longing for peace in the face of violence while dealing with the inner turmoil of right versus wrong leaves the man contemplating a future of happiness that might be elusive and unobtainable.

The Review

A Special Forces soldier takes matters into his own hands, rendering judgments sealed with a bullet.

Author J.R. Wheeless uses an unnamed narrator to provide commentary throughout Shot for Justice. While this approach may be somewhat unusual, it works rather well within the story’s framework.

At the center is Fred Cooper, a soldier whose service ends after a devastating injury costs him his foot. When he discovers his sister has been killed in a gang shooting, he wants answers.

Traveling across country gives him opportunities to deliver justice for women who are mistreated. As a sharpshooter, his skill set him apart from others.

The concept of the shadow narrator aside, some other elements could use a bit more polish for cohesiveness. Why mention Henry, Alix, and Toby so early in the story?

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
