Collected with Smile is Rahul Bhandari’s third collection of writing. This one attempts humor with a bit of absurdity. The eight short stories range in their levels of comedy.
Overall, the collection meets its goal, as the subtitle states: “an anthology for the slightly twisted.” The text shoots quickly back and forth between characters in some of the collection, with such exaggerated imagery and speed that some parts felt like I was a ping-pong ball in a championship match.
Bhandari has definitely shown, in this collection, just as in his other two works, that his creativity does not fall within the predictable or ordinary. His use of irony is exceptionally clever—the stories in the collection that rose to the top for me made good use of sarcasm.
The anthology is comprised of a ghosted guest, a junkyard startup company, a sudden ability to read pet’s minds, the laziest man alive that accidentally creates a social following, a trio of food heroes like none seen before, a WhatsApp group of matchmaking grandmothers, and an awkward young man who time travels and hopes for a redo in his most embarrassing moments.
I did feel like some of the humor was lost on me because many of the settings and cultural references were rooted in Indian subcontinent norms.
