5-STAR REVIEW: WHEN LEMONS GIVE YOU LIFE by Anna Johnston

The Description

Publication Date: April 28, 2026

Retired Michelin-star chef Griff Barlow has lost his appetite. He’s done with grief, guilt, and the beige slop they call food at Sunny Glen Aged Care Facility, where he resides. Six decades of life have handed him all the lemons he can handle, so he breaks into the nursing home kitchen to bake one last tart as his final meal. But the act of cooking stirs a dormant joy, and soon he’s sneaking in after dark to serve up flavor and comfort to fellow residents, who come alive with each bite—all while hiding a lie big enough to destroy the one thing he has left to protect.

Lisa, Griff’s younger sister and sole visitor, is navigating a midlife ADHD diagnosis, a new romance, and unexpected news that could change everything. Despite their fractured relationship, she keeps showing up, even with hope for reconciliation long buried in the silence between them. But the truth has a way of boiling over, and when secrets, soufflés, and second chances collide, Griff and Lisa may discover a recipe for forgiveness.

Heartfelt and inspiring, When Lemons Give You Life is a deeply human novel about love, forgiveness, redemption, and rediscovering joy when life has lost its flavor.

The Review

Griff Barlow lives a lie while sitting in a memory care facility, mourning everything he has lost. All it takes, though, is one last visit to the kitchen and a scrumptious lemon tart to change everything.

When When Lemons Give You Life offers a powerful story about relationships and rediscovering joy. Author Anna Johnston uses flawed characters to deliver an inspirational message full of hope.

Griff’s sister, Lisa, who visits him every day, offers an intriguing contrast to her silent, taciturn brother. It’s not until a medical diagnosis that the pieces fall into place. What is more intriguing, though, is why she continues to visit in spite of having a broken relationship with her brother.

As the story progresses, the author drops clues about the loss of Griff’s husband and the big event signaling the end of his career. Ultimately, though, reconciliation and forgiveness factor into the equation.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
