5-STAR REVIEW: Murder in White by Patrick Kelly

The Description

Wintergreen Mysteries: Book 3
Publication Date: November 15, 2022

A female hiker disappears in a snowstorm

As president of the Old Virginia Gun Club, Cassandra Key calls for a trustees’ meeting at the beautiful ski resort of Wintergreen, Virginia. Cassandra–a huge fan of outdoor sports–ignores a harsh weather forecast to undertake a solo hike across mountainous terrain. But then she disappears.

Wintergreen Fire & Rescue organizes a search mission, and many volunteers respond–including retired homicide detective Bill O’Shea. Despite herculean efforts, the search effort fails, and the next morning, a ski patroller finds Cassandra buried in snow. She is deceased–shot twice in the chest by a high-powered rifle.

The short-staffed Wintergreen Police Department asks Bill O’Shea to assist them with the investigation. After initial interviews, Bill has suspicions about several gun club trustees, including Cassandra’s ex-lover, the ex-lover’s fiancé, and an underling scheming for Cassandra’s job. But what Bill can’t sort out is how anyone shot Cassandra in the middle of a snowstorm from four hundred yards. Will Bill and his friends solve the mystery of a murder in white, or will a Wintergreen killer go free?

If you love beautiful mountain settings, a charming cast, and intriguing plot twists, you’re going to love the Wintergreen Mystery Series!

The Review

Murder in White by Patrick Kelly is the third book in A Wintergreen Mystery series, and once again, I was drawn into a Bill O’Shay mystery. I loved it, and I want to live in Wintergreen. Just don’t ask me to solve any murders.

I was lucky enough to read this installment of the series as I read the book before this one and was just as charmed by Bill as I was the last time.

Reading a male character’s point of view from a male author, it’s so interesting to read. I’ve noticed that male authors use emotions or physical reactions to describe how a male character perceives his surroundings. Female authors can write paragraphs describing a male character’s point of view, while a man can succinctly write in a few short sentences. It’s kind of like that in real life too. Men can sum up their perceptions in a few words, while women can talk about their perceptions for quite a while.

I genuinely love Bill O’Shay. He’s funny, intelligent, and tenacious, and I wouldn’t want him tracking me down if I was wanted for murder.

I also love the secondary characters and how the author ties up their loose end, and the reader gets to see what will happen next with these characters.

I’m delighted to see there’s going to be another book on the horizon. That makes me so happy.

With well-developed characters—both primary and secondary—strong plot lines, and a solid mystery, I highly recommend Murder in White not just to mystery readers but to readers of all genres.

I’ve reviewed before for the now closed Romancing the Book. I love reading whether it’s an ebook or a good old-fashioned book book. The smell of a book is such a nice smell. I work with handicapped adults in my real life and I live in New York State.
