3-STAR REVIEW: DIVISION X by August Hill

The Description

Publication Date: October 20, 2022

The monster killing business isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

We all have a monster within… understatement of the year. For 24-year-old Randi Matheson, she quite literally does. On every full moon, it rears its hairy head. She wasn’t always like this. Ever since her attack, the animal comes out to play. And on one full moon, the beast inside tries to eat her younger brother.

Division X, a paramilitary group hellbent on the eradication of monsters, intervenes and saves Randi’s brother from being devoured. They take Randi far away and imprison her in a place no monster can escape. Held captive, Randi is given an ultimatum. Work for Division X as a new weapon in the fight against evil or be dissected. Without a real choice, she chooses the former and experiences the dark underbelly of reality as she faces off against vampires, demons, and redneck serial killers. Promised a cure to her condition along the way, Randi does her best to stay alive.

The Review

What happens when there is a full moon? Why it’s time for the werewolves. Author August Hill delivers a modern-day werewolf story in Division X.

From the first explosive chapter, readers are treated to a bloody massacre courtesy of a werewolf. Bodies ripped apart in glorious detail are discovered by a duo of werewolf hunters determined to capture the creature. It takes more death and destruction before the hunters finally achieve their goal.

Randi Matheson, 24, survives a werewolf attack but is captured soon after she turns furry. Her captors give her the choice of working for them to fight evil creatures or be dissected for science.

What ensues is an explosion of bloody action. While the author is always very diligent in providing details about characters, including age and sometimes height, the descriptions fall flat. The characters who need further development don’t get it, while secondary characters like Mikey and his drugs get more focused attention.

With all of the elements mixed together in the story, it is challenging to create a cohesive finished product. Division X offers the promise of a unique paranormal tale but gets lost in the delivery.Buy Links

About The AuthorAugust Hill is an adult fiction writer. Born in Connecticut, August now lives in Massachusetts with his family. His novel appeals to young adult readers and people of any age who are looking for a good horror thriller. When not in front of his computer writing, August can be found playing Xbox with friends, watching movies (He’s a huge movie buff), or working out at the gym.

August’s knack for writing fiction emerged at an early age, when he wrote stories for his own enjoyment. He decided to put his hand to writing a book at 17, when he came up with the concept for the dark, witty, and suspenseful psychological-thriller, Barking Madness. He enjoyed creating the different layers of characters and relationships in his story, and like any debut author, found it difficult to stop. Science fiction and horror are his favorite genres.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
