5-STAR REVIEW: EARLY TERMINATION by Cindy Goyette

About The Book

A Probation Case Files Mystery: Book 2
Publication Date: January 7, 2025

There are two ways to get off probation early. The first is to be a model citizen and complete all requirements imposed by the court. The second is to die. In Early Termination, Phoenix probation officer Casey Carson’s clients aren’t civic-minded, but they are dropping like flies.

She’s on a gang’s hit list, a detective’s suspect list, and is torn while two very hot men vie for her heart. As more clients die and a probationer accuses her of brutality, she becomes the focus of the investigation. Casey risks losing everything in her race to find the real killer, but doing so will put the target squarely on her back. She will need to find the person responsible for lightening her workload before she’s the one terminated.

The Review

A measure of success for a probation officer is to decrease the number of parolees needing to be monitored. This typically happens when parolees follow instructions. However, Casey Carson’s clients are dying.

Author Cindy Goyette serves up an intriguing mystery featuring the Arizona probation officer in Early Termination. Having her business card found stuffed into a dead man’s mouth is definitely an attention-getter.

Not only is the writing crisp and refreshing, but the characters are well developed. Casey is a no-nonsense character with a solid dose of sass. Pairing her up with a canine pal adds to the story’s appeal.

Casey’s efforts to discover why the body count is rising are hampered by danger. In fact, if she isn’t careful, she may be next. Weaving in a bit of romance also adds to the depth of the story.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
