4.5-STAR REVIEW: PRETTIER WHEN STILL by O.J. Lovaz

The Description

Publication Date: May 26, 2026

When psychiatrist Emma Tyler learns that a former patient has died from suicide, unease settles in fast. The woman had been frightened. Guarded. And in their final sessions, she shared secrets that still haunt Emma.

Unable to quell her concern, Emma is drawn back into the life her patient left behind. A volatile marriage. A history riddled with lies. And a growing sense that her curiosity has not gone unnoticed. When a chance encounter brings an unexpected ally into her life, Emma clings to the feeling of safety he offers, even as her instincts warn her otherwise.

Because someone is paying attention.

As Emma digs deeper, the threat around her sharpens, closing in on her and her young daughter. The closer she comes to the truth, the more she is forced to confront a chilling possibility. The danger she fears may not be waiting in the shadows. It may already be inside her life.

The Review

Dr. Emma Tyler refuses to believe one of her patients committed suicide in spite of evidence to the contrary.

O.J. Lovaz chronicles Emma’s efforts in Prettier When Still, a slow-burning story of psychological suspense.

Threatening notes and break-ins indicate she is on the right path; she lacks concrete evidence pointing to another culprit. However, that changes when she teams up with private investigator Chuck Dunbar.

Emma becomes a target in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. The author does an excellent job of bait-and-switch, delivering an effective plot twist that illustrates how evil lurks in the shadows.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
