3.5-STAR REVIEW: MARKED by Chantol Aspinall

The Description

Publication Date: March 11, 2025

Avery Montgomery, the “cursed” Princess of Clarence, has decided that the marriage treaty between her and the King of Trenton, Christopher Winters, is for the best. She may never catch her husband’s eye or hold his affection, but she knows that, like her, he is willing to do anything for the welfare of his people—even marry a complete stranger. However, after a kidnapping and an unlikely alliance later, Avery begins to question truth from deception. Will she be able to follow her heart and still save her people?

The Review

En route to a forced marriage to the King of Trenton, Princess Avery is kidnapped and begins to question her future.

Set in the early 19th century in a fictional royal world, Marked is a light African-American romance written by Chantol C. Aspinall.

Princess Avery does not have the stereotypical royal appearance. With a dark birthmark covering one side of her face and a plump figure, she’s been ridiculed by her own family.

Kidnapped and offered marriage to the king’s twin brother, Princess Avery starts debating fact vs. fiction. If her goal is to represent her people, then which future should she choose?

The concept seems interesting, but there’s not enough development at less than 100 pages. Since the two kingdoms are fictional, the time period also seems a bit out of place. The idea of an imperfect female main character is a good one, but to equip her with superior sword-fighting skills doesn’t quite match.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
