Each theme is a shock, not all the pleasant kind, but all are told with a quiet eloquence. Rahul Bhandari chooses his sentence length and words with mastery to narrate short fiction.
Seven short stories share something similar here: silence. I was intrigued by the book’s summary, which states, “invites readers to explore the many shades of silence”. What could this mean in the written form? What it means is each story is steeped in silence. The character may be silent and be super aware of his surroundings, having the description of details very sharp. Or the character may keep a secret, and many more unique ways that are elusive in my description. Somehow, Bhandari creates the silence in a way that makes the absence of busyness or noise become almost a character in itself. The names, the food, and the routines were deeply entrenched in the culture from the Indian subcontinent; therefore, for me, there were large gaps in understanding. But my reading seemed tangible, as if I were witnessing the events. I may lack the cultural background to absorb all the details in this collection, but my appreciation of it is immense.
