The Description

Publication Date: October 21, 2025

“While a single sentence can turn a novel, a single word can turn a short story,” writes guest editor Don Winslow. The pieces featured in this collection hinge on those small, exacting moments that shock, spook, delight, and change a story entirely. A disgraced ex-cop approaches a crossroads with his ex-wife and new neighbor, pistol in hand; an ill-advised acid trip reveals the dark side of a twisted friendship; a hardened hit man struggles with his latest target. Full of dramatic twists, subtle clues, and chilling reveals, The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2025 will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last shoe drops.

The Review

Well-known author Don Winslow serves as the guest editor of the latest anthology highlighting The Best American Mystery & Suspense 2025.

Winslow gives credit to those involved in the crime fiction genre, honoring the tradition launched via the short story format. The anthology offers an introduction to 20 authors who published their stories in calendar year 2025 in American or Canadian publications.

It’s an eclectic mix, including a contract killer, a high school acid trip and special favors. The key is in the author’s ability to pack a beginning, middle and end in a satisfying manner.

Short stories like the ones in the anthology feature conclusions that typically leave the reader with something to ponder, which is certainly the case with “Road to Nowhere.” Although these stories are a far cry from the gourmet experience Winslow delivers with his novels, they do provide plenty of variety.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
