A Ghost Story for the Living
After losing her husband Wyatt to a sudden accident, interior designer SJ Monroe believes she is alone with her crushing grief. But nothing is further from the truth. A vigilant Wyatt follows as she reconnects with family and finds new friends. Signs from the natural world urge her forward. But not everyone wishes her well. While trouble looms, an ever-watchful Wyatt resolves to find a way to speak to SJ from beyond the grave – to tell her to abandon the grief and guilt consuming her, and to claim her happiness. Will she hear him?
Every Room Remembers is Tara Badstubner’s debut women’s fiction novel about the grief of a new widow whose husband died suddenly and unexpectedly in a work accident.
SJ lost Wyatt and had to learn to live without him, getting on with her life and work despite her grief. His dog, Hawk, becomes her constant companion, and she lets others into her life to help her heal and reshape it.
SJ’s an interior designer who moves from New York to where she grew up in South Carolina to start a new project renovating a historic home she had already committed to before his death. She reconnects with people she knew growing up, and some give off strange vibes. An older woman named Rose seems to have a mystical quality about her and seems to speak with Wyatt.
SJ’s sister, Mae, seems to be pushing her to meet and connect with Rose. Mae is also overstepping her boundaries without permission. I was sometimes comforted by the parts of the story told from Wyatt’s perspective, and he was woven into the present more than expected. Throughout, her life is often touched by signs from Wyatt, and for those who have lost someone close to us, it was relatable.
The story flows well, and we learn about SJ’s life little by little. We learn about her childhood and growing up in South Carolina, as well as when she and Wyatt started dating and their life together. I liked watching her try to rebuild her life and could see how it sometimes took a lot out of her, but she also made bad choices trying to get her life together. There are many surprises along the way, and not all of them are good. Some are subtle, while others have a bigger impact and serious consequences.
There is some closure, and the ending was not what I expected. There is a chance for happiness a year after Wyatt’s death, but the ending seemed rushed.
Every Room Remembers has some mystical happenings as the young widow tries to get her life in order. 
Tara Badstubner lives in beautiful Pennsylvania with her husband, children, and several silly dogs.
