5-STAR REVIEW: MURDER IN PERSIMMON BLUFF by Jody Chaffin

The Description

A Table Rock Lake Word Search Mystery: Book 1
Publication Date: September 2, 2026

They stopped speaking in 1980. Forty-eight word searches to the truth.

Earl Halstead and Joe Sowder came home from Vietnam like brothers and built most of this end of Table Rock Lake with one truck between them. In December of 1980 they divided the company down the middle and stopped speaking. Neither man ever said why. Their families have bid against each other ever since.

Now Marla Sowder, the engineer who runs the Sowder half, has been found dead in a Halstead driveway on a Friday night, and the county has already closed the case. Retired biology teacher Eleanor “Nell” Ashworth has been in Persimmon Bluff six weeks. Nobody here tells her anything.

But this time, the detective is you.

Read the chapters. Solve the puzzles. Track the clues. Each chapter hands you a scene and a word search, and the leftover letters spell out what the scene would not — a suspect cleared, a motive ruled out, a place crossed off. Across forty-eight puzzles you will gather everything you need to name the killer, the motive, the means, and the place, and you will get there the same way Nell does.

Six suspects. Two families with nothing to say. A verdict only you can reach.

A complete solve-along cozy mystery — no apps, no downloads. Just you, a pencil, and forty-eight word searches that build to a single solution. A perfect autumn read for cozy-mystery lovers and puzzlers alike.

Sharpen your pencil. Persimmon Bluff is waiting.

The Review

Although amateur sleuth Nell Ashworth moves to Table Rock Lake, she soon finds herself embroiled in what appears to be a closed murder case.

Author Jody Chaffin launches the first installment of a new standalone series with Murder in Persimmon Bluff. Just like the The Larkspur Hollow Garden Club Mysteries, readers are provided with one-page chapters followed by a word search.

Using the remaining letters, readers will find clues that will help solve the mystery. The immersive experience works especially well with the Kindle Scribe.

This case provides a unique twist because the authorities seem to be satisfied with a confession from a 78-year-old woman. Nell, however, is not.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
