4-STAR REVIEW: THE TEMPLETON MURDERS by HS Burney

The Description

Fati Rizvi Private Investigator Murder Mystery: Book 1
Publication Date: October 27, 2021

A body washes up on the shores of Lake Templeton, a small town on the coast of Vancouver Island. Sharon Reese, the victim, was a dedicated government employee. Everyone liked her, but no one knew much about her. Was she hiding something? Maybe a questionable past riddled with scandal. And did it lead to her plunge to death, in a drunken stupor, off the dock outside her secluded lakefront lodge?

Was it an accident? A suicide? Or cold-blooded murder? Private Investigator, Fati Rizvi, is determined to find out.

Fati arrives in Lake Templeton to find secrets that run as deep as the City’s sewers. Everyone is hiding something and nothing is as it seems. A cult escapee. A corrupt politician. A struggling airline. A multi-million dollar public-private project to revitalize the Lake Templeton waterfront. How are they all connected?

As Fati valiantly unravels the knots, another body is found on the shore. Is it the same killer? And can Fati stop them before they strike again?

The Review

Private investigator Fati Rizvi loves solving mysteries, so when she gets word that a body has washed up on the shore of Lake Templeton, she’s ready to uncover what happened. With The Lake Templeton Murders, author HS Burney rolls out a complex web of murder and deceit.

Fati’s investigative techniques combine technology with good old-fashioned communication skills, asking the right people the right questions. She’s a likable character full of determination, particularly when she notices irregularities that make homicide a likely outcome. She faces off against a mayor determined to push forward plans for a big revitalization project that has no room for negative publicity.

Add in a cast of unique characters, and the mystery only gets more complicated. I liked the fact that the culprit wasn’t identified until the end after several twists and turns. It was interesting to see the investigative process unfold, particularly since every clue seemed to create more questions.

The setting off Vancouver Island enhances the story’s appeal while offering a perfect backdrop of a small town poised for growth. As the story unfolds, Fati learns that there is quite a bit of drama and intrigue tied to this community.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
