From Under a Rock contains difficult subject matter, but it is a story that needs to be told. The author’s detailed depiction of her life is truly a story of resilience.

The Review

For author Tam MacPhee, sharing her horrific childhood and subsequent journey through adulthood offers an opportunity for other women to gain inspiration.

Her autobiography, From Under a Rock, details the abuse she experienced, along with her three siblings and their mother, at the hands of Tam’s father. Her childhood, coupled with extreme poverty, contributed to Tam making poor choices.

With one child out of wedlock and another given up for adoption, she finally gets a chance at happiness when she meets Steve. The storyline continues as more children are born, and Tam has to deal with her aging mother, among many of life’s twists and turns.

To say the story is perfectly written would be a lie. However, the words are authentic and raw. Looking back, we can all reflect on things we wish we had done differently. The author shows great courage in putting everything out there for the world to see. The inclusion of photos and letters provides another dynamic for readers as they become immersed in the story.

From Under a Rock contains difficult subject matter, but it is a story that needs to be told. The author’s detailed depiction of her life is truly a story of resilience.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.

  1. This is full of lies and breach of confidentiality. The family is looking into taking her to court. I’m surprised the police haven’t laid charges as of yet as she did not have permission to publish her sister’s story nor permission to use real names. The slander of several characters in the book is disgusting.
