Irina Balabanova is a beautiful Ukrainian girl, twenty-seven years of age and heartbroken. John Masters, a middle-aged American businessman, travels to eastern Ukraine on an ill-advised romantic venture, and is stranded in Kharkov with the onset of winter. Despite their wide differences of culture, language, and generation, the two are brought together in a whirlwind of love and adventure.

But their dreams of a life together are threatened by the acts of an extremely jealous Ukrainian State Security officer, who will stop at nothing to stop Irina from leaving their native country to marry an American. With perseverance and divine intervention, their love story unfolds in the most incredible way.

Inspired by actual events, Miracle From Ukraine is a story of international intrigue, faith, and romance.

The Review

Regardless of whether you believe in destiny and soul mates, there’s no doubt that the relationship between an American man and a Ukrainian woman unfolded under unusual circumstances.

Author James Herbert Harrison delivers a fictionalized story based on actual events in Miracle from Ukraine. His characters, John Masters and Irina Balabanova, are faced with a number of challenges that typically would have prevented them from even meeting.

The author traces Irina’s broken heart to a failed relationship with an American teacher working temporarily in Ukraine. At 27, Irina has almost given up hope on a happily-ever-after, especially since she spends her working hours trying to head off unwelcome advances.

Meanwhile, John travels to Ukraine in search of a bride at age 50. This aspect of the story is fascinating because he is working with an agency to help identify the right woman. A series of snafus puts John and Irina together. Thanks to technology, they can carry on a conversation and even become engaged.

However, a spurned security officer isn’t willing to let Irina go easily and throws up all sorts of barriers, including criminal charges.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.

  1. Dear Amy, thank so much for the review. It sounds as though you truly enjoyed Miracle From Ukraine. May I post your comments on my website?

  2. Thanks sincerely! My next release will actually be a rather explosive romantic tale involving a young racing star who gets entangled with his sponsor’s teenage daughter. I will send you a pre-publication copy in a few weeks.
