A couple inherits an apartment with a spine-tingling past in this unputdownable thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six.
Rosie and Chad Lowan are barely making ends meet in New York City when they receive life-changing news: Chad’s late uncle has left them his luxury apartment at the historic Windermere in glamorous Murray Hill. With its prewar elegance and impeccably uniformed doorman, the building is the epitome of old New York charm. One would almost never suspect the dark history lurking behind its perfectly maintained facade.
At first, the building and its eclectic tenants couldn’t feel more welcoming. But as the Lowans settle into their new home, Rosie starts to suspect that there’s more to the Windermere than meets the eye. Why is the doorman ever-present? Why are there cameras everywhere? And why have so many gruesome crimes occurred there throughout the years? When one of the neighbors turns up dead, Rosie must get to the truth about the Windermere before she, too, falls under its dangerous spell.
Rosie and her husband Chad are living day-to-day, and their bank accounts are starting to run dry. As they mourn the loss of Chad’s uncle, they receive a life-changing gift—a luxury apartment in The Windermere. But Rosie knows that the Windermere has a dark history, with many deaths and endless tragedy. But as their life starts to look up, the curse of the Windermere starts to rear its ugly head in The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger.
The Windermere has a long and storied history, a history that enthralls author Rosie Lowan. When her husband’s uncle leaves them an apartment there, she knows she can perfectly finish her book about the deaths and crimes committed there. At first, all seems well, with her book going better than ever and her husband’s acting career taking off. But things quickly begin going downhill. Rosie sees things in the basement of her apartment, and Chad seems to be keeping secrets from her. With death after death surrounding her, the Windermere’s past starts to catch up with the present, and Rosie’s life hangs in the balance.
I find myself picky with my thrillers. So many get caught up in the thrills that they lose track of the story. But this book was perfect. The story was fast-paced and never felt stilted. Unger was able to build each character and make you love every one of them. I adored the paranormal aspect of the story. I find it hard to get a good paranormal story, and this one had everything—paranormal, thriller, and mystery.
Right when I believed the tale was wrapped up, the twists just kept on coming. I couldn’t find any fault in this story, and Unger is a master at weaving a good story.
The New Couple in 5B is a thrilling mystery with a unique paranormal twist. Be ready for an anxiety-inducing thrill ride that will leave you at the edge of your seat.
