The Review

Secrets and Scandals by Piper Glendale is the first book in the Gilman Gazette Cozy Mystery series. Initially, it was slow going, and I felt the author thought we knew the characters instead of introducing them. Once I got past the first several chapters and figured out the characters, their relationships, and their motivations, the story flew.

Emily Delaney has a life in LA but returns after leaving several years prior in disgrace. While others in the town have forgiven her, she couldn’t forgive herself until now—perhaps. There were crimes to solve and a cold case to put to rest.

Once I got into it, the story had a good flow, and there were so many connected stories.  There are several clues, an amateur sleuth, possible romantic interests, lots of memories—good and bad—and friendships renewed. There were many surprises throughout, and I couldn’t figure out whodunit and why for several of the cases, but of course, Emily ties up everything quite neatly with a bow. The ending really surprised me since it didn’t end with solving the crimes.
