5-STAR REVIEW: YOU BELONG WITH ME by Mhairi McFarlane

The Description

Edie Thompson Series: Book 2
Publication Date: September 3, 2024

“The whole time I’m reading a Mhairi McFarlane novel, I feel like a fist is squeezing my heart… she is so ridiculously talented.”  Emily Henry

International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane delivers a charming, hilarious, and heartfelt new novel about a woman adjusting to life in the spotlight when she begins a relationship with a famous actor, in this highly anticipated follow-up to Who’s That Girl.

She found The One. But when everyone wants him, can she keep him?

Edie found true love. And on Christmas day, he’s knocking at her door.

Elliot Owen is handsome, charming and basically Hollywood royalty. And, he insists, madly in love with Edie Thompson: an ordinary citizen with tomato soup stains on her coat. It’s going to be complicated. Edie will have to learn how to live in the limelight, but they’re just too good together not to try.

Edie discovers it’s not easy when the press is the third person in your relationship, or when stories start leaking that force you to mistrust the motives of those around you. It’s tricky when you’re separated by an ocean and gorgeous co-stars and charismatic new colleagues are closer by. It’s harder still when your past is raked up by envious people determined to destroy your present.

Edie already knows how it feels to be infamous, now she’s going to find out what it’s like to be famous.

Are she and Elliot a fairytale, or a cautionary fable about getting what you wish for?

The Review

I mentioned in my other review that I had not reviewed books for the past year because I went back to school, but I’m back now and ready to read and review.

You Belong With Me by Mhairi McFarlane is an entertaining chick-lit fiction, one of my favorite genres. I haven’t read chick-lit books in a while, so I have no authors off the top of my head to reference this book. The only one I can think of is Megan Crane and her book English is a Second Language. This book is kind of like that.

Give me a feisty, strong, independent female character who has a soft, sensitive inside that only her one true mate can bring out of her.

I also loved Elliott. He was strong and sensitive, and he opened up to Edie and told her how he felt and wanted to be with her, flaws and all. He doesn’t exist in real life, but I want a man like that.

I can’t imagine dating someone famous and having my life out in the open for people to judge and comment on.

Numerous secondary characters are added to this book’s story, making it funny and adding something extra. I think my favorite secondary character was Edie’s coworker, Declan. He really added a lot to the story, and I wished that he had a happily ever after of his own.

The only negative comment I will make about You Belong With Me is that there was a lot of British humor, which I didn’t get. The book read like I was reading words on a page, but they weren’t making sense in my head. I guess this is a me thing and has nothing to do with the author. I’m just warning readers who aren’t British that some slang and vernacular may get lost while reading the book.

With plenty of heart and characters with hearts of gold, You Belong With Me is a fun chick-lit rom-com I thoroughly enjoyed!

I’ve reviewed before for the now closed Romancing the Book. I love reading whether it’s an ebook or a good old-fashioned book book. The smell of a book is such a nice smell. I work with handicapped adults in my real life and I live in New York State.
