As a member of the Air One Rescue team, pilot London Brooks has built a new life—one far away from her clandestine past as an operative tasked to take down a branch of Russian terrorists. She has no desire to reenter that world or endure the grief of losing everyone she loved, including her fiancé. But the past won’t stay past. When she finds herself falsely accused, her reputation tarnished, and her life in danger, she has no choice but to plunge back into the treacherous world she left behind. Even if she must surrender everything—and everyone—she loves in her new life.
Shep Watson will never forget the day he saved London Brooks from the avalanche that nearly killed her. He knows there is more to her story, but he’s intent on keeping her secrets. Just when it seems she’s finally ready to let him into her heart, her past comes knocking. But he can’t bear to lose her again, which means, somehow, he’ll have to enter her world, keep up with her, and figure out a way to bring her home. But when the danger comes home to Alaska, what will it cost the Air One Rescue team?
Join bestselling author Susan May Warren in the final, thrilling journey through the majestic Alaskan wilderness and beyond, where love defies danger and second chances are won with courage and determination.
One Last Stand by Susan May Warren is an action-packed adventure from the very start. We find Shep Watson spiraling downward in grief, bringing him to the very edge of his sanity.
Shep realized too late that he had fallen in love with London Brooks. His world is turned upside down when, as an Alaska Air Rescuer, he is the unfortunate one to find London dead in a submerged vehicle. At least it’s supposed to be London, but can he really be sure? The car is London’s, but the body is completely disfigured and the fingers removed.
Shep knows he has to move on and tries to put his life back together but isn’t having much success. Keeping an eye on him from a distance, completely incognito, is London. She misses him, but faking her death is the only way she can leave and protect Shep at the same time. Headed to catch a flight, London drives by Shep’s house one last time, but she knows something is off. When London checks things out, she finds a note to her on Shep’s kitchen counter. It’s from a shady character in her past promising Shep’s release if she returns something of great value that she has. London is forced to reveal herself to her former Alaska Air One team, asking for their help to rescue Shep.
Thus begins a fast-paced, international plot filled with intrigue, spies, counter-spies, ambassadors, castles, a prince, and some extremely bad guys who will stop at absolutely nothing to get what they want, including killing London or any of her friends. She wants to complete her mission but protect them, especially Shep, all while trying to figure out who London Brooks really is.
One Last Stand is the fourth and final book in Warren’s Alaska Air One Rescue series. This book could easily stand on its own with its vivid descriptions of Alaska and Montelena, along with the gripping details of rescue operations and skiing. The action sequences were exciting, leaving you breathless and looking around the corner for the next surprise or unexpected turn. However, the extensive background and history from previous books, including unfamiliar names of former characters, was confusing for a new reader of the series. The action was compelling, though, and the story engaging.
One Last Stand is a harrowing dive into a world of espionage and living a double life so deeply you lose track of who you are and what you truly want. The secret just might be finding true love and holding on—no matter what.
