The Description

The Damsels of Discovery: Book 2
Publication Date: March 25, 2025

A Lady with a past. A man with ambition. A romance far from London society that might bridge their divides.

Lady Phoebe Hunt never anticipated returning from exile. A fatal choice drove her from England, but the death of her father—and the revelation of his debts—has brought her home. Once she settles her father’s estate, she will return to America, where she has reinvented herself. There’s no reason to remain, not even for one gravitationally challenged but deliciously tempting entrepreneur: Sam Fenley.

Samuel Fenley is all ambition. Rising from shop boy to wealthy investor, he’s left knocking on doors that open only for those with a title. Unless he buys the damned door itself—and the estate that goes with it. Sam offers to relieve Phoebe of her burdens, but is her crumbling mansion all Sam wants? Or is it the Lady herself?

When threats from Phoebe’s past spark new dangers, Sam and Phoebe discover that neither is what the other expected. Standing on the edge of disaster, the disgraced Ice Queen will have to decide if she wants to forge through life alone, or let an unlikely hero melt her heart.

The Review

Victorian England typically conjures up innocent young women paired up with a dastardly rake alongside some sort of drama.

With The Damsels of Discovery series, author Elizabeth Everett flips the script. The second installment, The Lady Sparks a Flame, delivers a spirited female main character in Lady Phoebe Hunt.

She returns to London after being exiled in America to help settle her father’s estate. It’s evident early in the story that Phoebe is far from a shrinking violet. She is part of a group of women encouraged to pursue intellectual interests, which means she has more than a bit of disdain for social norms.

Sam Fenley always seems to fall down or stumble in Phoebe’s presence, which adds a nice dose of humor. While he has plenty of hard-earned money, he can’t break through the binds of Society without a title.

Sam and Phoebe present a fascinating set of main characters who find each have what the other needs. It’s an unusual sort of romance, though. While it may be set in Victorian England, Sam and Phoebe are quite non-traditional (in a new and interesting way).

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
