The Review

Grannysaurus is a read-aloud picture book set up to have great voice performances. David Walliams has written a story that will capture the attention of even those youngsters who avoid story time with a grandparent—especially 7-10-year-old boys!

The Granny in this story is not the stereotypical grandmother. She isn’t even the modern grandmother portrayed as enjoying nature or braving a water park. She sports a grey mohawk and matches the energy of her grandson, who never wants to go to bed during his sleepovers at Granny’s house. After she chases the boy to bed and the lights go out, she becomes a dinosaur!

A picture book is often only as good as the illustrations, and Adam Stower has the same “too cool for school” child in mind here. There are plenty of details, with the overall goal being humor. Walliams chooses his wording carefully to propel the story with action. Even his font choices support the reader in emphasizing the story’s cadence for full enjoyment for both the listener and reader.
