3.5-STAR REVIEW: MY FATHER’S HOUSE by Ulf Kvensler

The Description

Publication Date: August 5, 2025

Isak receives an unexpected inheritance from his father on one condition: that he meet and make peace with the man at his remote island retreat. Once there, Isak finds himself thrown into a twisty psychological game of life and death, from the internationally bestselling author of The Couples Trip.

Isak works in home care in a small town in Småland. One day, he is contacted by his father, an internationally known artist, who left Isak when he was a child. His father is dying, and his only wish is to reconcile what remains of their relationship as father and son. He promises Isak his fortune, but Isak has certain reservations. Alongside his girlfriend, Madde, Isak decides to visit his father, but the line between nightmare and reality blurs as family secrets unravel.

From the internationally bestselling author of The Couples Trip comes a brand-new stand-alone psychological thriller, for readers of Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley.

The Review

Still haunted by a family tragedy stemming from his childhood, Isak’s peaceful life is interrupted by a message from his estranged father.

Author Ulf Kvensler orchestrates the classic story of a dying man whose last wish is to make peace in My Father’s House. While Isak and his girlfriend reluctantly agree to visit, the trip leads to a whirlwind of unexpected events.

From an organizational perspective, there is a mix of past, present, and future, but no labels to prepare readers. As a result, it is difficult to get a clear picture of what is happening.

An added challenge is the character’s own struggle between what is fact and fiction. The author successfully crafts a series of delusions, but it is confusing to tell if there is any truth to them.

Isak gets caught up as a pawn, which forces him to confront secrets from the past. Unfortunately, the storyline seemed to wobble too much, making it difficult to follow.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
