4.5-STAR REVIEW: THE NEW YEAR’S PARTY by Jenna Satterthwaite

The Description

Publication Date: November 4, 2025

New Year’s Eve hits different in your thirties. Especially when the party ends in murder.

It used to be an annual thing—the raucous New Year’s party full of games and hors d’oeuvres. But for Olivia and her friends, the chaos of their thirties has really challenged the definition of annual. It’s been a few years since the close friends were last…close. But this year is gonna be different. The burnout, parenting stress, credit card debt, job drama, marriage troubles, addiction—they’re going to set it all aside for the night. No, really. They swear.

Oh, except for the secrets. Every last person has one… But secrets are only as good as the people you trust to keep them, and when the wrong one slips out…well, friends or not, that just might become motive for murder.

Everybody thinks they know their closest friends—until somebody winds up dead.

The Review

It’s been five years since they last gathered, but the Original Four share a bond from high school. For one night, they plan to gather for what promises to be an epic event filled with alcohol and a lavish menu.

That’s the premise behind The New Year’s Party by Jenna Satterthwaite. While on the surface, it seems like the group is ready to celebrate, there are a number of subplots waiting to be revealed.

From a character standpoint, Phelps sets the stage by adding both his date and an ex-girlfriend, Bunny, to the mix. Mix in the other three guys—Bennett, Will, and Doug (plus their spouses)—and the party is set.

However, each character brings a unique perspective to the party; not everyone is there ready to welcome the new year. The storyline unfolds through 10 perspectives, which might seem excessive, but it works very well in this instance.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
