4-STAR REVIEW: THE NEW NEIGHBORS by Claire Douglas

The Description

Publication Date: February 17, 2026

Unassuming neighbors may not be what they seem in this twisty, spine—tingling thriller from the internationally bestselling author of The Couple at No. 9 and The Girls Who Disappeared.

They seem like the perfect couple. But what are they hiding?
When Lena overhears a conversation between her next—door—neighbors she thinks she must have misheard.
The Morgans are a kind, retired couple who recently moved to their sleepy suburban street in Bristol where nothing ever happens. But to Lena it sounded very much like they were planning a crime.
Her family and friends tell her she must be mistaken. Yet Lena can’t stop thinking about that strange conversation. What if they really are about to do something terrible?
What if she can prevent it?
Especially when doing something might help ease her conscience about her own dark past . . .

The Review

Henry and Marielle Morgan move into the house next door to Lena, brimming with excitement about the area.

However, overheard conversations cast doubts about the couple, especially as Lena experiences strange occurrences. Author Claire Douglas weaves a tale of suspense with The New Neighbors.

While there is a fascinating backstory that unfolds regarding Henry and Marielle, Lena’s angst with her estranged husband, along with her efforts to help a client find his missing sister, are more of a distraction.

It’s not until later in the story that Lena’s past becomes more relevant. The author adds some interesting twists to bring the story together with an unexpected conclusion.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
