The Description

Publication Date: April 28, 2026

Meet Max Starkey—disgraced CIA operative turned underworld fixer—whose past loves, rivals, and indiscretions close in on him in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Seven years after a CIA mission in Laos went sideways, Max lives in the gray spaces between criminals and justice, recovering stolen goods for villains who don’t ask questions. But when he’s lured to Bangkok under false pretenses, his past catches up with him.

The setup: an old flame, Kelly Riggs, now married to his CIA rival.

The job: steal $130 million in dictator-owned gold before a coup ignites.

The problem : everyone plans a double-cross—and Max is the mark. Then there’s Giuliana Abara, Max’s sharp-tongued “companion,” an undercover FBI agent with secrets of her own, who further proves that trust kills and redemption demands blood in this high-octane debut thriller—spanning the streets of Bangkok to the Laotian rainforest— by screenwriter Gregory Poirier.

The Review

The last place former CIA operative turned mercenary Max Starkey wants to go is back to is Laos, where his final official mission left him battered physically and emotionally.

Author Gregory Poirier delivers an action-packed thriller in A Thousand Cuts. Lured back under false pretenses, Max must navigate a treacherous plan to steal a dictator’s stash of gold bars.

Not only does he have to work with a former lover, but she is now married to Max’s rival. Add in an undercover FBI agent, and the action ramps up.

What makes this story stand out is the character development. The author does an excellent job developing Max by adding top-notch skills along with a gritty intensity. His dilemma with the current job is filtering out the old emotional attachments and taking action.

From a development standpoint, this is the type of mission where life and death depend on being three moves ahead to avoid multiple double-crossing attempts.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
