The Description

Publication Date: February 18, 2026

Protagonist Kade Tobin, a teacher at a rural spiritual community, finds himself in extraordinary—and extraordinarily terrifying—circumstances on an otherwise peaceful April morning. Prompted by the uncustomary howl of his beloved canine companion, Zeus, Kade discovers the body of a young woman.
What follows will force Kade to use every bit of his wisdom he can summon to remain true to his core values. Drawn into helping to solve the mystery by sheriff’s detective Bill Cullen, Kade sorts through the array of quirky seekers on the community’s land. But Kade himself has secrets—and as the murders pile up around him, he soon becomes the prime suspect. Swept up in a world where the lines between fact and fiction become disarmingly intertwined, Kade ends up as the defendant in a suspense-filled trial. He struggles to maintain a stance of kindness while he endures bullies in the jail, a vengeful DA, and the pending judgment of twelve strangers. As the prosecution parades witness after witness, the mounting evidence against Kade becomes alarmingly damning. If he were a juror, Kade believes he might vote to convict himself at this stage of his trial. But he also trusts the universe. Kade remains confident that a force greater than himself—and the justice system—has other plans for him. Or does it? Expected the unexpected in this intense, intricately layered, and enigmatic thrill ride.

The Review

When the spiritual leader of an isolated community finds a woman’s dead body, he never imagined being the primary suspect.

Author Verlin Darrow creates a suspenseful thriller in The Brighter the Light, the Darker the Shadow. Kade Tobin must defend his innocence while standing up to those determined to close the case.

With local authorities trying to write him off as a “cult leader,” Kade finds his peaceful nature put to the test.

The author does a good job of presenting a main character who remains anchored, regardless of the circumstances. The conclusion provides a satisfying way of meting out justice while also acknowledging the wrongly accused.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
