4-STAR REVIEW: SECRETS OF LOSTMOR by Ann Belinda Smythe

The Description

The Lostmor Series: Book 1
Publication Date: May 20, 2025

Secrets of Lostmor is the captivating story of a crumbling estate in the wilds of Cornwall and an enduring mystery that encompasses love, murder and revenge.

In June 1971, Alice Sanders is celebrating her sixth birthday at her family’s Cornish country home in Lostmor.

By the end of the evening, an event has occurred that is so horrific it will change the family’s lives forever.

Years later, following the death of her mother, Alice’s sister, Lily, reluctantly returns to Cornwall for the reading of a mysterious will. Once there, with the help of new-found friends, she unravels a web of secrets surrounding her family’s past, finds love, and unlocks the reasons for the nightmares that have plagued her since that fateful night.

The Review

When Lily Sanders returns to her hometown after 24 years, she never expected to learn her late mother’s secret.

Author Secrets of Lostmor delivers a multi-layered story highlighting how devastating past events shape the present in Secrets of Lostmor.

Lily must discover what really happened the night her father and sister died in order to put her nightmares behind her. A blossoming attraction to a local resident features an unexpected plot twist that almost destroys Lily’s chance at happiness.

Meanwhile, a second storyline involving a horrific wreck also involves secrets from the past as a father seeks answers about the unknown man who walked away.

Add in the vacant Penwyth House for a haunted house type vibe. In this instance, it is more like a memory keeper that has been closed up—exactly the way it was left.

About The AuthorHello! I live in the UK and am a Bristol-born author with a lifelong passion for reading. I spent over a decade working as a copy editor for a charitable company, during which time I began writing my own stories.

My debut novel, Secrets of Lostmor, published in May 2025, is a romantic suspense set against the dramatic backdrop of Cornwall’s rugged coastline and windswept moors. I’m delighted to say that I’ve since completed the sequel, Murder in Lostmor, due to be published this December.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
