4.5-STAR REVIEW: THE LEDGER by Steven Manchester

About The Book

Companion Novel to The Menu
Publication Date: May 26, 2026

Set in a medium-security penitentiary in the mid-1990s, The Ledger is a faith-based story that pulls back the curtain on prison life, allowing the reader a safe peek behind the wall.

Although told from three alternating perspectives—officer, inmate, and sergeant—many of the same questions are asked: Can light be found in the deepest darkness? What about forgiveness, redemption, and grace? And if the code is clear, “loyalty above all things except honor,” when should an officer cross the blue line to police one of his own?

The Ledger is the long-awaited companion novel to The Menu.

The Review

Life inside the prison system comes with the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Author Steven Manchester offers a peek to readers in The Ledger, which is a companion to his first novel, The Menu.

Told in three perspectives (inmate, officer, and sergeant), the story tackles the brutality of a medium-security penitentiary in the mid-1990s. However, the faith-based story confronts challenging topics such as redemption, forgiveness, and honor.

One of the most difficult aspects centers on a corrections officer determined to wield his power without regard for consequences. Although prisoners are behind bars for a reason, they should still receive humane treatment.

The author provides multiple opportunities that provoke thought about the corrections system and its overall effectiveness. When considering it from a faith-based approach, redemption and grace play significant roles.

The Ledger offers a unique view from within the prison system about human nature and the ability to change.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
