The Description

North Falls: Book 2
Publication Date: August 11, 2026

The next thrilling mystery in the new North Falls series from Karin Slaughter, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Good Daughter and the Will Trent Series.

Welcome to North Falls. A small town with big secrets…

1601 Iris Drive looks like any other house on the quiet, residential street. But rumors are rampant about the Vickery family, and what goes on behind closed doors.

When gunshots ring out, Sheriff Emmy Clifton and her sister, ex-federal agent Jude Archer, discover a devastating crime scene. Allison Vickery has been murdered in her own kitchen, and her teenage daughter is bleeding upstairs, left for dead.

Everyone thinks they know what happened. But secrets are buried everywhere in this small town.

And it’s up to Emmy Clifton to uncover the truth…

The Review

Chalk up another winner for author Karin Slaughter.

This time around, she pulls out the stops with a multi-faceted murder investigation in The Secrets We Hide. On the surface, the premise appears simple—a retired female cop is murdered in her home, and her teen daughter is barely alive.

In the town of North Falls, though, everyone has secrets. Sheriff Emmy Clifton is mourning the death of her mother while adjusting to the return of her much older sister, Jude.

As the second thriller in the North Falls series, this installment illustrates a vulnerability in Emmy’s character. Her attempts to fill her late father’s shoes are met with resistance from some of the staff, which means the upcoming election could be a toss-up.

However, Emmy’s attention to detail, along with some help from Jude, leads to a much deeper investigation with ties to the past. Old secrets have a tendency to work their way to the surface.

This time, those hidden secrets pack a powerful punch, contributing to an unexpected (yet incredible) conclusion. It’s easily enjoyed as a standalone, but reading in sequence will provide a better introduction to the community.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
