4-STAR REVIEW: MURDER AT THE GRAND ALPINE HOTEL by Lucy Foley

The Description

Publication Date: September 22, 2026

The brand-new Miss Marple novel from Lucy Foley, the #1New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List and The Midnight Feast.

High in the Swiss Alps, accessible only by a single, winding railway, stands the luxurious Grand Alpine Hotel. With glorious mountain views and exclusive access to powdery slopes, it draws guests from far and wide.

The notorious actress.

The high-flying politician.

The society wife.

The reckless friend.

The shrewd doctor.

But not everyone is here for a winter holiday.

Beneath the champagne and furs, dark histories simmer; old grudges emerge like cracks in the ice.

And someone is watching from the shadows. A polite, unassuming woman with an extraordinary mind: Miss Marple.

When a body is found and a blizzard cuts off all escape, only Miss Marple can connect the clues before the killer strikes again. Because it isn’t a question of who has a motive, but who’s next…

The Review

Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel by Lucy Foley starts us in the right direction with the prologue and a dead body on a gondola. This murder mystery begins two days before and is set in the Swiss Alps in the 1950s, but whose body is it?

The book offers vivid descriptions as it introduces the characters, including Miss Marple, and various characters tell the short chapters. The characters are from all walks of life, and some are not the most savory. The story includes plotting, secrets, hidden agendas, and naivety. There are also unexpected connections.

The story unfolds at a good pace, but the flow is sometimes off because the narrator changes frequently. There are many twists and turns, along with dead ends. My senses were engaged as I could feel the cold, taste the food and drink, and observe the various activities which were at times unexpected. And why is everyone using binoculars, and do some just see a murder take place? If so, whodunnit, since they were observing from a great distance.

There are clues, red herrings, and several amateur sleuths, but Miss Marple is front and center. When we circle to the death in the gondola, it wasn’t who I thought, but it made sense once all the clues were brought to light and the loose ends were neatly tied up.

About The AuthorI’m the author of the new Miss Marple novel, Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel. My previous books have included my murder mysteries: The Midnight Feast, The Paris Apartment, The Guest List and The Hunting Party — as well as the historical novels The Book of Lost and Found, The Invitation and Last Letter from Istanbul.

I came to writing through a love of reading — I previously worked with books as a fiction editor, a literary agent’s assistant, a bookseller and a literary scout!

Inspired by trips to the West Country and local folklore I began plotting my latest novel, The Midnight Feast. A midsummer heatwave, a setting with a past, a reunion that takes a dark turn. And so The Midnight Feast came to life.

Thanks to brilliant readers around the world, my novels have sold over five million copies, and been translated into multiple languages. I’m also a No 1 New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller. A life-long Agatha Christie fan, I also contributed to Marple, a collection of short stories featuring the legendary detective.
