Shelter & Sky: Book 2
Publication Date: October 6, 2026
Sometimes the place you least expect to belong is exactly where you were always meant to land.
Self-sufficient Penelope Reid has her life completely mapped out—a necessity after surviving foster care. Now she’s on a mission to prove that she’s capable of managing a halfway house at Twelve Bluebells Ranch. The last thing she needs is hindrance from the charming Luke Granger, who asked her to dance three years ago, then disappeared before the music began.
Luke lives a nomadic lifestyle as a security specialist and has never found a reason to put down roots. So when the ranch neighboring Twelve Bluebells is vandalized, securing the area is just another gig for him before he hits the road—until he’s reunited with the bossy brunette and her generous heart.
As Luke and Penelope work alongside each other to care for the ranch’s halfway house residents, Penelope makes a mistake she might not recover from. Her careful walls begin to crack, and Luke’s restless heart finds reasons to stay. But when tragedy strikes, they must decide if it’s worth the risk to lower their guards for a love that could give them the home they’ve always longed for.
A poignant, emotional, no-spice contemporary romance about all the heartbreaking ways we can fall and what it takes to put us back together again. This clean and wholesome opposites-attract love story with a protective MMC will delight fans of Abby Jimenez, Katherine Center, Annabel Monaghan, and Corinne Michaels.

After We Fall by Deborah Clack is the second book in the Shelter and Sky series and the perfect continuation of the series. The vivid descriptions of the Colorado backdrop and the story’s settings made me feel like I was there.
Penelope and Luke take center stage, but we reunite with many other characters we met before. It was fun picking up where we left off with the various stories, and I was immediately drawn in as I learned about Harlan and Meredith’s upcoming wedding. I loved that Luke’s young daughter, Alex, was part of the story. There’s a serious injury and lots of healing in many ways. Penelope is embracing a life that she never thought would belong to her given her upbringing.  It’s why she relates to the girls in the group home run by Meredith.
The story has a good pace, with highs, lows, and emotional moments. Penelope and Luke are drawn together, and she fights it all she can, but with the love, support, and affection others show her, she starts to believe she might be worthy. Their slow romance was a delight, along with their chance of a happily ever after. The discussion questions were different and thought-provoking. The excerpt from the next book left me wanting more, and I hope they tie up some of the loose ends.
After We Fall is filled with emotional moments that show strength, perseverance, and resilience. Watching them come out the other side of it made me smile.
