Another who-dunnit featuring one of your favorite Senior sleuths as well as an exciting new installment of The Mystery Book Nook Shared World.

Gladys is head over heels excited for the new community garden project. In fact, she’s created a whole new event: the Community Garden Plant Potluck. The plant potluck is more popular than even she imagined until one of the community garden members is found toes up in the tulips, dead as can be.

Gladys won’t rest until the killer is planted in a jail cell and the Community Garden project is free to grow again. But when clues don’t make sense, she might have to do a little out-of-the-box research using an interesting new resource, The Mystery Book Nook Forum, online.

The Review

Toes in the Tulips by Katherine H. Brown was a fun read with a mainly senior cast, and Gladys is the amateur sleuth always in the thick of things, especially when she’s the main suspect in a murder investigation. She pleads her innocence, but the sister of the murdered community garden member keeps making a ruckus that Gladys is guilty, and the cops seem to believe her, or do they?

This is the first book I’ve read in either series—Adventures of Gladys, and this particular book is part of The Mystery Book Nook Shared World cozy mystery series by multiple authors—but I jumped in and felt right at home.

Gladys and her friends have amassed some clues, and she’s one step ahead of the police in solving the crime. Her safety was often in question, but Gladys was all for the good of the community. Could she even have a potential new love interest? I loved the name of the Ooey Gooey Bakery, where Gladys sometimes worked and could taste and smell the mentioned goodies. A recipe or two would have been the icing on the cake!

Multiple stories are being told and tied together seamlessly. Some of the crimes Gladys and her friends have helped solve are mentioned, and I look forward to reading the books I’ve missed. There are friends and family, lots of plants mentioned, some slapstick comedy with laugh-out-loud moments, fear, anger, a plant potluck, evil, and more criminals than I expected.

There is closure in solving the crimes and revealing whodunnit and why. The title is spot on, but the cover seemed bland, although it contained some essential details.

Ms. Brown is a fairly new-to-me author, only having read one other book in a connected series. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Toes in the Tulips is a fun whodunnit with lots of chocolate and delicious baked goods. The characters led by Gladys led us on a merry chase through their small town to figure out who really is the murderer!
