5-STAR REVIEW: COLD THREAT by Nancy Mehl

About The Book

Ryland & St. Clair: Book 2
Publication Date: January 23, 2024

Twenty years ago, several people were murdered in Des Moines, and the only evidence left behind was a snowman ornament hanging ominously on a tree in the victims’ front lawns. With a suspect behind bars, the killings have come to an end–or so everyone thought. But now crimes with a similar MO are happening in a small Iowa town, and a local detective believes the killer is back and ready to strike again.

With little time left on the clock before they have another murder on their hands, private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair must work alongside Tony’s detective father to find evidence that will uncover an evil that has survived far too long. As the danger mounts and the suspect closes in, it will take all they have to catch a killer–before he catches one of them.

The Review

The snowman ornament at the crime scenes connects a series of fires together, providing a new challenge in the Ryland & St. Clair series.

Author Nancy Mehl delivers another thrilling mystery in Cold Threat. This time, private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are wrestling with a 20-year-old cold case involving Tony’s detective father.

While they are scrambling to prove the killer is back, River and Tony are back in danger’s crosshairs. It will take every ounce of River’s newfound faith to weather not only the stress of the case but also the continued threat of a stalker.

Although the book could technically be read as a standalone, I recommend reading it sequentially. Thanks to a teaser at the end, it looks like the final installment will be available this summer. Given the buildup so far, it will be incredible!

The dynamic between the two investigators is interesting, with both carrying scars from the past. Faith plays a pivotal role in the series as River finally embraces it.

Cold Threat serves up a new challenge for the private investigators, taking them on a roller coaster ride of plot twists.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
