4-STAR REVIEW: BARGAINS OF FATE by Sharon Virts

The Description

Fields of Honor: Book 2
Publication Date: June 23, 2026

Based on true events from the American Regency era, this riveting sequel to Masque of Honor explores the thin line between power and integrity, love and lust, honor and death.

Though the twisted scars on his arm still tell the tale, Jack McCarty has worked hard to put his duel with Armistead Mason in the past. He’s one of Virginia’s brightest young lawyers, married to the love of his life, and poised once again for political stardom—an opportunity he thought he’d lost when forced to face Armistead on the field of honor.

Lucinda Lee has also moved forward, closing the door on the betrayal that almost ended her courtship with Jack. But even as she and Jack begin to build a seemingly charmed life, Lucinda watches the women who fawn over him with suspicion—and bristles at the brazenness of her sister Fanny, a hopeless flirt.

When a horrible tragedy binds Fanny and Lucinda together in ways they never imagined and Jack falls prey to a disastrous lapse in judgment, the family struggles to keep scandal at bay. As Jack is swept up in dramatic court cases and festering disputes, he once again finds himself at the wrong end of a dueling pistol. Is the man he has worked so hard to become slipping out of his reach?

The Review

When readers last left Jack McCarty, he was still reeling from the effects of a duel that put an end to his political career.

However, in the second installment of the Fields of Honor series, Jack is on the cusp of regaining what he lost. Author Sharon Virts draws on true historical events as inspiration for Bargains of Fate.

Set in the early 19th century, the story focuses on the up-and-coming Virginia lawyer as he steps back into the limelight. It is interesting to note that Lucinda still maintains a close eye on him because of the past. She and her sister add some complications to the story.

Jack’s penchant for trouble continues as he gets embroiled in family scandal. Although he learns valuable lessons about trust the hard way and finds himself once again involved in a duel, he finally seems to be in a good spot.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
