4-STAR REVIEW: BREATHE FOR ME by Donna B. Comeaux

The Description

Publication Date: December 1, 2023

At the edge of the raging Colorado River, Robert Jaeger stands ready to end his life. He is in mourning over his dead wife and having a hard time picking up the pieces to care for their four-year-old daughter.

Lilly Radford hasn’t been the same since her baby died. Unable to cope, she drives for days and ends up at the Colorado River and falls in.

Before Robert can execute his heinous act, he is catapulted into rescue mode to save another. In his zealous attempt, he soon realizes this stranger may have saved him.

When he returns to Seattle to face life alone, he is stalked by two inevitable threats. Zachary Butler, a cold and calculated killer, is close on Robert’s heels determined to kill Robert for getting him fired. But the second threat is just as lethal, leaving him to wonder how his heart will survive a second chance at love or the heartbreak sure to follow.

Entangled in a world of selfish ambition, these characters chase something mankind has never been able to capture. Time. And if Robert and Lilly don’t get over their selfishness, they may never experience the beauty lying just below the surface of their pain

… if Zachary Butler has his way.

Amid the anger, madness, darkness, murder, obsession, ambition …

How will it all end?

The Review

Two broken people meet under challenging circumstances, both grieving what they’ve lost.

Author Donna B. Comeaux explores loss and second chances in Breathe for Me. Complicating matters is a man set on revenge.

Emotions play a significant role. While Robert mourns the loss of his wife, Lilly grieves her toddler daughter. It is only through chance that they are thrown together.

Their happiness is threatened by Zachary Butler, who has a grudge against Robert. His character adds an extra layer of suspense as someone dealing with dissociative identity disorder. It’s fascinating to see how the author differentiates between Zachary and Zac.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
