When asked, “What do you do?” sometimes I pause and assess. Sure, I am a published author. I run a business for writers who want to become published. I am a podcast host. I’m an editor. I’m a consultant. I’m a yogi, a meditator, a breathwork aficionado. I’m a plant-based eater. I’m an athlete. I’m a homeschool mom. I’m a wife.
But at the core of everything, I’m a writer.
As a child, I started as a reader first and quickly morphed into writing. I wrote to capture my days in tiny hardbacked diaries with locks and keys. I wrote letters, stories, and poems. With every upset or victory, I wrote.
I wrote when I got made fun of. I wrote when I won awards. I wrote through endless trips to the ER. I wrote after winning gymnastics competitions. I wrote through sexual assault. I wrote through brain surgery. I wrote through my first marriage and divorce. I wrote books. I wrote for prisoners. I wrote between books. I wrote blogs. I wrote articles. I wrote love letters.
Every single day, I wrote.
For me, there is rarely a separation between being a writer and living my life. Even if I can’t sit down and create fiction, I’m still writing: for my clients, in sweeping book proposals; for my daughter, in tiny good morning letters; for my husband, in a quick scribble with a dry erase marker on our mirror.
I process life through words…and for me, I’m entangled. From the time I rise and journal, to the time I go to bed and read…
I’m a writer first.
