GUEST BLOG: How Publishing Has Changed Over the Years by Andrea Kane Plus Giveaway!

I’ve been a published author for over thirty years (and a voracious reader and dedicated writer for an endless time before that). Lately, many of my readers have been asking me how my writing and my writing process has changed over that time.

Being a novelist is a constant changing and evolving process. Some of that change happens because of advances in technology. Some of that change happens because of publishers’ needs—and sales goals. Some of that change happens because the author evolves as a human being, with different interests that develop over the years and other interests that wane.

In my case, I was a total romantic when I began. I was also a lover of good suspense, and an explorer of history. I read romance, mystery/suspense and biographies about famous people long gone. The place and time period that fascinated me the most was Regency and Victorian England.

So what does an aspiring novelist do with all that?

Let’s begin by saying I never make things easy on myself. I could have gravitated to any one of those genres and stuck solely to it, or jumped around book by book. That’s just not me.  I had to do it all.

So I carved out a place for myself in the cross-genre of historical romantic suspense.

I wouldn’t compromise on any of it. I had the most extensive, and still growing, library of historical research books that ranged from the English Manor to undergarments of England’s Regency and Victorian times. I frequented antique bookstores, pored over secondhand book catalogues, and scoured college libraries. The result?  Fourteen published novels in my chosen genre. And I can honestly say that, despite all the agonies of writing, praying, and finally being selected for publication by Pocket Books (an imprint of Simon and Schuster), each novel I wrote was a labor of love.

Things have changed (not my commitment level) since I moved deeper into the suspense genre. I’ve published seventeen suspense thrillers. My research process is obviously very different. I can talk to living experts and explore pertinent information with them. I can take advantage of modern technology—it’s great to be able to text rather than to send messengers on horseback with missives for the Bow Street Runners. I learn new and amazing skills, events, procedures, etc.  In the process, I’ve found myself moving some of my other interests to the back-burner, and thrown myself into the exciting world of modern-day suspense. Still, there’s always a tinge of romance and a depth of relationships (be it family members, friends, colleagues, or adversaries) woven through the pages.  Character development means too much to me to abandon that.  And I’m still a sucker for a satisfying, happy ending.

About The Book

Forensic Instincts: Book 9
Publication Date: March 22, 2022

Aimee Bregman had the perfect life. She had an enviable job as head of marketing for an up-and-coming CBD-infused beer that was taking the tri-state area by storm. She had cultivated a massive social media following that showcased the beer at college campus parties and alumni events―and had fun doing it. She had an attentive, steady boyfriend and friends who believed in her. Everything was going right.

But when her long-time mentor, Rita, sets up a business meeting with an important influencer―her life crashes all around her. The casual meeting over drinks suddenly devolves into a shouting match between all parties, and any chance of a new business relationship is over before it begins. Hours later, when the NYPD shows up at Aimee’s apartment, questioning her about Rita’s abrupt disappearance―foul play suspected―Aimee realizes she’s in way over her head.

Fearing that Rita has been murdered, and that she may be next, Aimee hires Forensic Instincts to keep her safe and figure out what’s really going on.

Forensic Instincts, a brilliant investigative firm who walks the fine line between legal and illegal, solves challenging and high-profile cases when the bureaucratic restrictions imposed on law enforcement get in the way of achieving results. But neither Aimee nor Forensic Instincts realize how ruthless, how connected, their adversaries are. As dangerous and powerful people are threatened with exposure, anyone is fair game for elimination. And when multiple victims die at the hands of a sociopathic serial killer, it gets harder and harder to tell where the battle lines are drawn… and who might die next.
