5-STAR REVIEW: UNRAVELING by Marta Hobbs

The Description

Publication Date: February 14, 2023

For far too long women have been told to get in line, follow the rules, be good girls, lower our voices and play small. So we twist ourselves into pretzels abandoning our true selves for the acceptance of others.

No more.

We are here to rise up, speak our truth and share our hearts.

This is my story…

It is a journey towards what’s underneath the facade I presented to the world for so long – the unspoken pain so many of us carry and run from for most of our lives. It’s about the trauma in my body and what it looks like to finally face it and heal it. My very own unraveling, which happened after I chased all the things the world told me would make me happy. The emptiness and disappointment of “having made it” shattered my heart. And the crisis, the burn out, the exhaustion, the shock of it all led me to a sacred doorway – the path within – breaking open, breaking through and eventually breaking free. In my search for answers, I found myself.

If you are longing for a life filled with meaning, purpose, peace, intimacy, trust and love it all starts with reconnecting to your soul. This is coming home. May this book guide you along your way there.

The Review

At 39, Marta Hobbs was living a perfect life with a successful career, a healthy marriage, and children. Faced with a health scare, she becomes overwhelmed with crippling anxiety.

In order for her to regain control, she has to look back to her childhood in Poland. In Unraveling, author Marta Hobbs shares her struggle to find freedom.

Through the eyes of a child, readers see a young Marta living under Communist rule. Her family had more resources than most, as evidenced by their various summer trips. However, when it no longer becomes safe in Poland, the family travels to America.

As a teen, Marta’s experiences in the United States are complicated by the language barrier, making her life miserable. This trauma stays buried until her health scare. She articulates the events of the past clearly, especially her disappointment that the United States wasn’t the welcome refuge of her dreams.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
