About The Book

The Asylum Series: Book 2
Publication Date: August 8, 2023

The world has disintegrated. Civilization has collapsed. Chaos is the new normal.

But I, Lacy Monroe, intend to survive.

My lover Jace and I can’t escape my corrupt uncle, Senator Thomas Moore. He captures and separates us, forcing us to work for him. He sends me to Mexico City to secure an army to overthrow what remains of the US government. He sends Jace on a suicide mission to conquer New Mexico, the only remaining free state in the Southwest.

I was captured. Beaten. Groomed for a sex trafficking ring. But my brother is looking for me…

Jace plays a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, pretending to help my uncle while secretly sabotaging him. But if his deception is discovered…

I want to become the Ascendant, the one who risks it all and defeats my uncle, then finds some measure of peace in this strange new world. But time is running out for us and this treacherous world we now inhabit.

Don’t miss this thrilling sequel to Susy Smith’s acclaimed debut novel, Asylum, the perfect “next-read” for fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent.

The Review

Jumping into a series midstream is often a gamble. With The Asylum Series, reading in order is the recommendation.

Ascendant, the second installment in the dystopian series by Susy Smith, picks up the storyline from where it ended in Asylum. The main characters, Lacy and Jace, return to fight as revolutionaries against a hostile government.

It’s a tough battle, especially when your primary adversary happens to be a relative. Lacy’s uncle, Senator Thomas Monroe, will stop at nothing to mete out punishment for disobedience. That includes having Lacy beaten and then using her as a pawn against a human trafficker.

Full of explosive action, Jace and Lacy’s brother work to derail the senator’s plans while trying to rescue Lacy. Ultimately, secrets come to light during an explosive showdown.

Ascendant delivers a set of interesting characters fighting against a power-hungry man who will do anything to achieve his ambitions, even if it means harming a relative.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
