Detective Marissa Ambrose is a small town detective with scars—both physical and psychological. While she survived a brutal attack, her assailant still haunts her, sending photos and letters. Despite her efforts to keep people at a distance, her relationship with FBI Agent Mackenzie helps breathe new life into her existence.

As Detective Ambrose investigates a Jane Doe’s potential murder, she finds herself closely involved with a turbulent family. Struggling to find answers and making promises that she can’t guarantee, she finds herself obsessed with the case—so much so that she forgets the danger that is always hovering over her head.

The Review

Marissa Ambrose has been living a nightmare for over two years following a brutal attack that she claims involved two assailants, one of whom continues to stalk her with letters and photos.

Author A.K. Ramirez delivers the second installment in the Marissa Ambrose Witness Series with Memories & Scars. Once a small-town detective, Marissa continues to fight the deep emotional scars left by the brutal attack.

Picking up where Secrets & Photographs leaves off, this installment highlights Marissa’s isolation. Rather than risk her family and friends, she has withdrawn, relying on FBI Agent James Mackenzie instead. Their blossoming relationship may be one of the benefits of her situation, but it is built on a rocky foundation.

While the suspense level ratchets up with the delivery of messages from her unknown assailant, Marissa takes on a case that results in the rescue of a young teen who temporarily moves in with her. Caught up trying to help Kate, Marissa becomes embroiled even deeper in the case.

As a side note, this story ends on a cliffhanger. From sibling relationships to coping with trauma, the storyline continues to gain momentum, engaging readers and keeping them invested in the final outcome.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
