5-STAR REVIEW: CITY ON FIRE by Don Winslow

The Description

Danny Ryan Trilogy: Book 1
Publication Date: March 14, 2023

Two criminal empires together control all of New England.

Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing. The winner will forge a dynasty.

The Review

Enter the world of organized crime, where family means everything. Author Don Winslow delivers an action-packed first installment of a series in City on Fire.

The main character, Danny Ryan, has married into the Irish crime family. As the story begins, the author takes readers on vacation to Goshen Beach and provides the back story of how Danny met his wife, along with his tendency to be more of a follower than a leader.

The cast of characters rivals that of The Sopranos, with a tentative truce between the Italians and the Irish getting blown up over a woman. The bloody carnage that follows pits brother against brother and forces Danny to get involved.

The return of the mother who abandoned him as a child throws a wrench in the action, particularly as Danny and his wife are expecting their first child.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
