The Description

Dukes and Secrets: Book 4
Publication Date: February 27, 2024

“I’ll be your scoundrel, not your hero.”

Broken and devastated, the former Duke of Grandhampton, Lord Spencer Seaton, returns home from the war to find he has lost everything. His only goal is to exact vengeance upon the man who took everything from him.

Nothing will stop Spencer… except, Miss Joanna Digby—intelligent, cunning, and mysterious. A wallflower, she conceals her true self behind a facade, only to have her family threatened by the same man who ruined Spencer.

But as fate would have it, Lord Seaton stands in her path, and she in his.

And yet, it is his unlikely rival that begins to revive Lord Spencer’s soul.

He proposes a deal: If he gets evidence against their mutual adversary first, she must surrender her virginity to him. If she is the first to procure the evidence, he will stop his chase.

One scandalous wager, two determined rivals, and three dangerous days spent in close proximity.

Can love resurrect the soul of the man who came back from the dead?

The Review

Lord Spencer Seaton lost his dukedom, his lady love, his health, and almost his life when he became a press-gang victim.

Now, he’s back with revenge on his mind. Author Mariah Stone uses Spencer’s deep-seated bitterness to depict a broken main character in Betting Against the Scoundrel. As the fourth installment in the Dukes and Secrets series, this Regency historical tale successfully wraps up the story that began with All Duke and Bothered.

While reading in sequence isn’t required, it is recommended to understand the nuances between the characters. Each book focuses on a different couple.

With this installment, Spencer’s revenge plot is interrupted by his target’s niece, Joanna Digby. She has her own reasons for seeking revenge against her uncle. The sparks fly between the two, leading Spencer to utter this swoon-worthy line: “I’ll be your scoundrel, not your hero.”

Ultimately, it becomes a redemption story as Spencer learns what love truly means. There’s plenty of spice and adventure as the storyline reaches a satisfying conclusion.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
